The Photovoltaic Giant Halts US Expansion Plans!

On August 26, Swiss solar panel manufacturer Meyer Burger revealed that it has temporarily halted its plans to establish a new factory in Colorado, United States. In a statement, the company unequivocally stated: "After careful evaluation, we have determined that the economic viability of constructing a facility in Colorado Springs is no longer viable. As a result of this strategic shift, the Board has instructed management to initiate a comprehensive restructuring and cost-cutting program".

Concurrently, Meyer Burger's 1.4GW module production facility in Goodyear, Arizona, which was initially scheduled for a 0.7GW expansion, has also been put on hold.

In its restructuring announcement, Meyer Burger disclosed its intention to continue pursuing smaller-scale debt financing by monetizing the tax credits available for its U.S. module production facilities.

Reflecting on the past, Meyer Burger had announced plans to establish a new factory in the U.S. at the end of last year and subsequently closed its largest solar module production base in Freiberg, Germany, in April of this year. However, this strategic adjustment now presents new uncertainties for the company's future trajectory.

Notably, in late June this year, Meyer Burger announced the successful audit and commencement of production at its heterojunction module plant in Goodyear, Arizona. Upon full operation, this plant will achieve an annual production capacity of 2GW, sourcing the necessary cells from Meyer Burger's factory in Thalheim, Germany.

Additionally, Meyer Burger had outlined plans to construct a heterojunction cell factory in Colorado, USA, with an annual capacity of 2GW. Regrettably, this ambitious undertaking has now been suspended.

In its August 26 statement, Meyer Burger further affirmed that its solar cell production base in Thalheim, Germany, will remain the cornerstone of the company's supply chain, signifying that despite not receiving the requested government subsidies, the German facility will continue its operations unabated.   (Date: August 26, 2024 / Source: Solarbe Photovoltaic Network)
